Copenhagen is the capital and most populated city of Denmark. It is second largest in Scandinavia with the urban population of 1,246,611, situated on the eastern coast of Zealand. Founded as Viking fishing village in the 10th century, Copenhagen became capital of Denmark later in the early 15th century. During the 17th century, under the region of Christian IV, it developed into an important regional Centre.
Since the turn of millennium, Copenhagen has seen strong urban and cultural development, facilitated by the investment in its institutions and infrastructure. The city is cultural, economic, and governmental centre of Denmark and one of the main financial centers of Northern Europe with the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. Copenhagen was ranked 3rd in the richest cities in the world ranking in 2009 in terms of gross earning. The inner city is the historic centre which has Copenhagen's most amazing monuments and attractions.
